Olivia Whetung’s exhibition inawendiwok (January 27 – April 7, 2024) featured beautiful and thoughtful artworks that incorporate beading.
Whetung uses different types of beading practices in her work, such as flat work with the Peyote stitch and advanced Peyote tubular techniques to create three-dimensional objects; beadwork on a loom to create stunning panels; and digital computer programs to create prints that look like beads.
In conjunction with inawendiwok, Olivia presented two online beading workshops in March, offering a special opportunity to learn from the artist. Some of the participants really took to beading and are now able to produce pieces of their own. We also invited Mohawk and Cree artist Katie Longboat to teach several classes in which participants learned how to produce a small broach on a stiff fabric.
Olivia and Katie are both amazing and generous teachers who were able to share their artistry in beading. These workshops are generously funded by Rama Gaming House and Charitable Gaming Community Good.
