It has been a busy month here at the Art Gallery of Mississauga (AGM), with many creative exploration opportunities. Our TD Programming Curator, Musha Neluheni, planned a series of three workshops that focused on the themes of home and leaving home, inspired by our recent exhibition, Across Latitudes. In these workshops, artist facilitator Tiina Salo-Devries invited participants to explore the deep connections between personal memory and the objects we carry from our homelands. The final workshop focused on the question, “What would you take from this country if you had to move?” One participant created a beautiful mixed-media self-portrait and said she always took herself with her wherever she moved. What a fantastic image to carry with you.
In September, we also welcomed a local homeschool group to explore animals of the Arctic using printmaking. The group gathered in our Resource Room, and educator Jennifer Polo read a story about Arctic Animals. Afterwards, students chose an animal they wanted to draw, and from there, Jennifer taught them basic techniques for printmaking. The room was full of energy and excitement as the children created their prints.
Moving out into the community, we also presented an Art Hive for the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation near Hagersville for their Caring Week. Educators Abbey Humphreys-Morris and Jennifer Polo created an inviting array of art materials so folks could sit and colour, braid, draw, stitch, and create magic wands. It was a wonderful evening!
These programs are made possible thanks to the financial support of TD Bank Group and the support of Rama Gaming House and Charitable Gaming Community Good through their Charitable Bingo initiatives.
