Bringing Art to the Community and the Community to Art

October was a busy month at the Art Gallery of Mississauga!

We kicked things off by bringing back Art Hive, our lively drop-in art-making session that welcomes everyone to explore their inner artist. The main principle of the Art Hive is that art-making is a fundamental human experience, and the goal is to inspire creativity, learning, and skill-sharing. On October 9th, art therapist Cynthia Morin led the session, attracting over 18 participants of all ages who painted, sewed, and dove into mixed media creations. These sessions will continue the second Tuesday of each month, from 2:30-4:30 pm, until the end of the year. Please join us!

On October 16th, AGM Community Activator and Education Programmer Jennifer Polo joined forces with Acorn2Oak, a fantastic non-profit based in Mississauga, dedicated to the health and well-being of their community members, for the first of three sessions for seniors to learn the ins and outs of watercolour painting.

At Acorn2Oak’s facility, artist facilitator Taryn Lee shared her watercolour wisdom, guiding participants through the essentials of the medium—covering everything from the best types of paper to the perfect brushes. The seniors had a blast exploring various watercolour techniques, and we can’t wait to continue these sessions with such a wonderful community partner.

Finally, we hosted our popular Family Sundays, led by facilitator Farah Rehmani. In this engaging session, participants of all ages were invited to unleash their creativity by crafting “Ghostly Creations” using vibrant acrylic paints and spooky cut-out shapes. Events at the gallery like Family Sundays help us foster a sense of community and connection through art, while encouraging family togetherness. We’re thrilled to continue offering these dynamic family programs, encouraging creativity and hands-on learning for all.
