December 20, 2024, Mississauga, ON – The Art Gallery of Mississauga (AGM) is proud to acknowledge the extraordinary generosity of Mr. Hunter Thompson, a devoted supporter of the arts and community. Mr. Thompson’s donation has significantly strengthened the gallery’s ability to preserve, showcase, and celebrate artistic excellence.
In honour of his late wife, Valerie Greenfield, who was a Founding Director of the AGM, a portion of Mr. Thompson’s donated funds have been used for a dedicated library space at the gallery. The Valerie Greenfield Library was officially unveiled on Sunday, December 15, 2024, ensuring her love of art continues to inspire future generations. This thoughtful tribute reflects art’s profound impact on their lives and their longstanding commitment to fostering cultural enrichment.
Mr. Thompson has also contributed substantially toward the purchase of a new storage racking system for the AGM vault, which houses our permanent collection. His support provided the matching funds required to receive a Museum Assistance Program Grant with the Government of Canada to purchase the new system. This project has allowed us to reorganize our holdings and expand our storage capacity to provide a safer, more accessible environment for our current collection and generate additional space for future acquisitions. Additionally, Mr. Thompson recently donated a significant painting by Canadian artist Gordon Rayner, titled 500 years in Chiapas, to the AGM permanent collection. Rayner’s work is currently on view until January 12, 2025, as part of a series of rotating exhibitions highlighting new acquisitions to the AGM’s collection.
“Hunter Thompson’s generosity speaks to the vital role art plays in connecting and uplifting communities,” said Anna Gulbinski, Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Mississauga. “Through his donations, we can enhance our ability to protect and share our collection and resources while also honouring the memory of Valerie Greenfield. We are deeply grateful for his dedication to the arts and to the Art Gallery of Mississauga.”
The AGM remains committed to its mission of connecting people through art and fostering appreciation for creative expression. Contributions like those from Mr. Thompson enable the gallery to continue offering meaningful experiences and opportunities to engage with the arts.
